Why would I use a Rubik’s Cube Timer?

If you are new to the Rubik’s Cube puzzle solving, you might be guessing why anyone would want to use a special program for timing, if hand timers have been sold since 1850s. Well, if you are a novice, you shall probably not need this software. Special timers for the Rubik’s Cube are used by avid speed cubers. And they would tell you that such programs save precious seconds.

However, if you are a traditionalist, there is StackMat timer designed especially for speedcubers.

Kinds of Rubiks Cube Timers

There are 2 main kinds: for computers and for iPhones. Some users prefer iPhone applications, but more often computer apps are chosen.

On your computer you can run a cube timer online or download a setup file.

From the view of a plyer’s level, you can find timers for beginners and for speed cubers.

Timers may also differ depending on your preferred Internet application or layout: I found timers for Google personal page or for Firefox browser, for Windows or Linux.

There are special timers for different kinds of Rubiks Cube: diagram, keywords cubing, prisma, etc.

Main functions of Rubik’s Cube timers

All timers show the following values:

• Time you spend to solve
• Records of your solves
• Your average solve time

Most of them also allow seeing if your skills improve or go down: you can check for your best and worst time.

There are features to measure “average” time, e.g. the timer records time you spend for solving, and shows average 3 of 5 solves, etc. But here you need to remember that the best and the slowest times were excluded, like they do it during official speedcubing contests.

As in near to any computer application today you can choose your favorite panel colors, fonts and themes.

Some timers allow you to store views of scrambles.

You may have option to save a random (or your favorite) scramble.

Often timers can be equipped with a sound option.
